In a fishing lodge in rural Tilghman County, Georgia two Englishmen, Froggy and Charlie, arrive as guests. The shy Charlie agreed to accompany Froggy on the trip after his sick wife begged him to go. When people at the lodge try to talk to Charlie, however, he remains silent: he is terribly shy, depressed about his wife's illness, and cannot find the words to reply. Froggy claims that Charlie cannot talk because he is a "foreigner" from an exotic country, and does not understand English. Taking the explanation that he's a non-English speaker as fact, the lodge's guests quickly begin revealing their secrets, and Charlie soon discovers scandals amongst some of the residents of the lodge.
Charlie Baker (mid 30s-mid 40s): A meek proofreader for a science fiction magazine; he has a merrily adulterous wife who disdains him, yet whom he misses. Depressed and shy, Charlie comes out of his shell as he finds himself the center of attention, and ultimately possessed of such inner resources as wit and courage.
S/Sgt. "Froggy" LeSueur (mid 30s - mid 40s): A cheerful British Army man who travels to teach the use of his specially designed explosives detonator package. He brings Betty souvenirs, and flirts with her at every opportunity.
Betty Meeks (65+): An elderly widow who owns a resort lodge and mothers her guests. Good-natured, ignorant of the wider world, she often wishes she'd had the chance to travel and see "real foreigners" as Froggy gets to do.
Cathrine Simms (mid 20s - early 30s): A pretty heiress going through an emotional time. A kindly caretaker for Ellard, she soon comes to rely upon Charlie for his quiet patience as a confidant.
Ellard Simms (early 20s): Catherine's dim-witted brother, heir to half the family money if Catherine decides he is "smart enough to handle it.” He is trusting and gentle, but no one gives him the time of day until Charlie comes into the picture.
Reverend David Marshall Lee (mid 20s - mid 30s): A polite, good-looking white Christian man, engaged to Catherine and, "it would appear, a good young man to have on our side.” His charming demeanor dims for the audience when he is alone with Charlie, as he begins to show his true colors.
Owen Musser (30s - 60s): A superstitious, dangerous white supremacist who lives in town.
